The Hadassah Medical Center has found that a newly invented rapid test to diagnose tuberculosis is highly reliable and efficient. This test was developed by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, in Baltimore Maryland, USA; the Imperial College, London; and Universidad Peruana Cayetano Heredia, in Lima, Peru.According to Prof. Shlomo Maayan, Head of Hadassah’s AIDS Center, this test is of major importance because the spread of HIV infection weakens the body’s immune system and makes it susceptible to tuberculosis. Hadassah’s AIDS Center has been approached to help introduce the test to Africa via Ethiopia, as part of the Israel Consortium on AIDS medicine in Ethiopia.
