This past summer, Mexican Entrepreneur Sion Soffer consulted with Hadassah Medical Center Director General Prof. Shlomo Mor-Yosef in Jerusalem to begin planning for the development of trauma facilities in Mexico City.
Mr. Soffer’s primary goal is to construct free-standing trauma facilities throughout Mexico City where a trauma patient would be treated and stabilized and then transferred to a local hospital. Currently, there are no such trauma centers. The Mexican health ministry, private investors, and private and Social Security hospitals will be asked to participate.
While at Hadassah, Mr. Soffer explored various aspects of the project including the building and equipment requirements for a trauma center, the training of medical teams who will staff the centers, and supervision and quality control. He met with Prof. Shmuel Shapira, Deputy Director General; Prof. Avi Rivkind, Chair, Department of Surgery and head of Hadassah’s Trauma Unit; Prof. Iri Liebergall, Chair of Orthopedic Surgery; Dr. Miri Rom, Director, Henrietta Szold School of Nursing; and Dr. Orly Toren, Assistant Director, Hadassah Nursing Services Division.
Ethel Fainstein, Director of Hadassah International for Latin America, and Ron Krumer, Hadassah’s Director of External Relations, accompanied Mr. Soffer during his two days of meetings. Prof. José Cohen, head of Endovascular Neurosurgery and Invasive Neuroradiology, joined them for lunch and briefed Mr. Soffer about Hadassah’s world-renowned areas of excellence. Mr. Soffer also viewed the construction site of the new Sarah Wetsman Davidson Tower and learned about the crucial role the new inpatient facility will play for the future of Jerusalem.
“During the visit,” Mrs. Fainstein notes, “Mr. Soffer was able to perceive the passion and professional dedication of our doctors.”
Mr. Soffer comments, “I was truly able to comprehend, close up, the broad projection of a Trauma Center and all the necessary requisites to take on a project of this magnitude. Hadassah has a wonderful team of doctors, who give special meaning to human life. I feel committed to launch this trauma project.”
