On the third night of Hannukah, at Hadassah Ein Kerem, Hananiah, who was wounded in a terror attack, lit the menorah together with Prof. Josh Schroeder from the orthopedic team that saved his life.
“I’m happy to be at Hadassah tonight and to add more light to the people of Israel—the light the terrorists thought they could put out .”
Hananiah Ben Shimon, 24, from Jerusalem, was caught in the terror attack on the Ma’ale Adumim road. He was seriously injured but managed to shoot the attacker, who was then neutralized.
Since then, he has undergone complex orthopedic surgeries and a long rehabilitation process at Hadassah that enabled him to stand on his own two feet again.
At the ceremony, organized by Hadassah’s Chabad rabbi, Israel Naftalin, Hananiah lit the Hanukkah candles together with Prof. Josh Schroeder, head of the Spine Surgery Unit in Hadassah’s Orthopedic Division, whose team saved his life.
“I’m standing here today after a long rehabilitation and surgeries that restored the abilities I lost because of the injury,” Hananiah said at the ceremony. “The orthopedic team at Hadassah—Prof. Meir Liebergall and Prof. Yoram Weil, the ICU staff, all the hospital departments, and of course the Gandel Rehabilitation Center’s team at Mount Scopus—got me back on my feet. This is a long journey and they have been a true source of light along the way.
“This is a very emotional and meaningful moment. I’m happy to be at Hadassah tonight and to add more light to the people of Israel—the light the terrorists thought they could put out.”
